Central Oklahoma Church Dogmatics reading group

Due to several participants moving away, the Central Oklahoma Church Dogmatics reading group has been suspended for a while.

———–

We are a small group with diverse backgrounds and ages, representing various church traditions, who share a common interest in Karl Barth’s Church Dogmatics. We meet once a month, usually the third Saturday from 7-9 p.m., to discuss a relatively short section, perhaps 50-100 pages, of the Church Dogmatics. We meet in a home on the east side of Norman. We welcome you to arrive 30 minutes early and socialize beforehand – coffee, hot chocolate and tea are provided.

Discussion is informal, prayerful and lively but not argumentative. Our purpose is to help one another better appreciate what we are reading, whether or not we agree with the text. No prior knowledge of Barth is assumed or required. Questions are welcomed at any level – whether from a novice Christian or an unbeliever, whether ministerial or academic.

We are patient and expect flux. Reading the Church Dogmatics is a long-term endeavor, and we all know that life happens in the meantime. No extraordinary heroism is expected – come when you can, read what you can, come even if you didn’t complete the reading for that month. Perhaps hearing what others found interesting in the text will help you decide whether to go back and catch up, or simply to go on with the aid of the discussion or a reading guide. And don’t hesitate to come if you’ve never come before; one may dive in to the Church Dogmatics anywhere, at any time, just as one may visit Yellowstone without traveling across the entire continent from coast to coast. And while one person may regard Yellowstone as their favorite national park, another may prefer camping in Arches or Zion; in the same way, not everyone will find every section of the Church Dogmatics equally compelling.

We invite you to join us if you live in the central Oklahoma area.
